York People First Magazine Summer 2014.
We would like to wish you a very happy Easter!
We started off the New Year well with 3 training sessions in January. We worked with probation staff in Leeds, a session on communication with staff at West Offices, York and a session with student midwives at York University.
This month we’ve been working with a company called Options in Liverpool
Our Shakespeare project at Once Seen is going really well.
At history club we’ve visited Kings Manor and planned a trip to the Farming Museum.
February being a quieter month we’ve been writing funding applications and starting to put this magazine together.

Welcome to our Autum newsletter.
We hope you've enjoyed the summer and had a chance to have a holiday. Although some people tell us they can not longer afford to have a break. In this magazine some people do tell us about having a break.
Abi, our student nurse has been doing great workhelping people get their Health Action plans up to date.
We have been very disappointed by the councils introduction of pre paid debit cards relating to direct payments. There has been no consultation around this issue. After 20 years of direct payments it seems the auditors have a problem. More about this later.
This month we have also been to the 'meet the directors' session which gives us the oppertunity, as members of the Equality Advisory group, to raisissues with the council directors. This time it was Ian Floys, customer and business support service.
We hope that at the moment you are all enjoying the warmer weather. Some of us have already been on holiday, Michael went on a cruise and Sandra’s been to Italy.
Becca and Michael went to the first meeting of UK People First.
We have been disappointed lately because it seems that people with learning difficulties are being pushed out. People want to meet with us listen to our ideas, collect information and then use those ideas for their own purposes. It feels very much like people are biased against people with learning difficulties or they just can’t be bothered to make information accessible.
For example a policy about ‘Hate’ crime was launched in 2007. Accessible leaflets and reporting forms were made, we made a DVD and since then have been going into schools.
It seems a ‘Hate’ crime policy is being launched again without accessible material!
Health Action Plans were talked about in 2002 but quite a lot of people still have no Action Plan.

Dear Friends, Happy Easter!! Last February Michael went on to Facebook to say we were short of money. The result was Look North picked it up and they came and filmed us.
A business man called Phil Shanks got in touch with us and offered to help us. Phil has been working with us all year helping us to market ourselves and sharing his resources. He and his colleagues have now got together to give us the money to employ an administrator for 3 years. We will be interviewing at the beginning of April. Thank you so much Phil for believing in us!! We hope this will be a turning point for us we have so many plans for the future!!
Congratulations to Becca and Matt on their engagement on Valentines Day!! We all celebrated at theatre rehearsals on the Friday with several bottles of champagne. We wish them every happiness in the future.
On a more serious note we heard Castlebeck who ran Winterbourne View has gone into liquidation. The spokeswoman on the radio said they hoped it would be sold as a ‘going concern’!! (more later)
We hope you all have a happy Easter break.
York People First
It's Christmas! And just in time for the big day we have finished our last issue for the year of York People First the Magazine.
The city of York council leader, James Alexander came to visit and it was a good opportunity to talk about some of our issues.
We have also been busy with our own theatre company’s play ‘Down the Pan’!
We went to see ‘Up Down Boy’ in the Studio at the Theatre Royal.
We also have done a session at Barlby High School about communication with 130 young people! It was very noisy but good fun.
These last few months have although brough a couple of lovely surprises. Waitrose donated £100 to us which Andy collected and then the police sent us £500. A huge thank you to both!
We’re hoping to be able to appoint an Administrator at the beginning of next year which will make a massive difference to us.
York People First will close on Thursday 20th December and open again on Tuesday 2nd January. Have a wonderful time, download the magazine and take care during the holidays.
